Every year, an innumerable number of adults commit to their oral health and decide to straighten their teeth. Will you soon be among them? You can look forward to many benefits, both for your appearance and your overall wellness. In the meantime, though, you might be nervous about how your treatment will affect your normal routine, particularly if you have a busy work schedule. This blog post aims to provide practical information. Here are some tips for wearing braces to work:

Pack an Oral Hygiene Kit

Excellent oral hygiene habits will aid you in maintaining a healthy smile throughout your time with braces. It would be wise to bring some basic supplies with you to the office so you can freshen up after meals and snacks. You should have a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss on hand. You should also have a floss threader so you can easily clean between your teeth even though they will have brackets and wires on them.

Bring Your Own Lunch and Snacks

During your first few days with braces, you should eat only soft foods. Even after you adapt to your treatment, there will still be some items that you should avoid. If you bring your own food with you to work, you will be better equipped to resist the temptation to eat something that might damage your teeth or your braces.

Drink Plenty of Water

You should sip on some water after each meal so you can rinse away food particles that might otherwise cling to your teeth and braces.

Also, keep in mind that coffee could stain your brackets and your teeth. You should try to limit your intake, but if you really need an occasional pick-me-up from the office coffee machine, be sure to drink some water afterward so you can keep your smile as fresh as possible.

Break Bad Habits

Do you keep a lot of pens and pencils at your work desk? Do you sometimes gnaw on them out of habit? Doing so could damage your teeth and your braces. Do your best to break this habit so you can avoid an emergency trip to see your orthodontist. Some people find that sucking (not biting!) on sugar-free candy is helpful.

Smile and Be Confident

Some adults are under the impression that braces will affect their professional image at work. However, it is important to keep in mind that orthodontic treatment is becoming more and more common among mature individuals. In all likelihood, most people will not care that you have braces. Do not be afraid to let your smile shine!
