Dental Maintenance and Prevention
Routine cleanings and examinations
Dental cleanings and examinations every six months, combined with good home care, including flossing and the regular use of an electric toothbrush after eating, are the best defense against dental disease. Your hygienist will check for dental decay, periodontal (gum) disease, and for signs of oral cancer when your exam is preformed after your teeth have been cleaned.
Scaling and root planing
Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure in which the hygienist removes plaque and tartar from underneath your gums. This procedure helps to prevent your gums from receding which can ultimately lead to periodontal disease. Your root surfaces are cleaned, smoothed and polished with specially designed instruments including the cavitron and the prophy-jet. It is important to remove all the plaque and tartar from the pockets underneath your gums because the presence of plaque will encourage bacterial toxins to gain a foothold leading to irritation of the gums, bad breath and periodontitis.
